Why I have so many un-read magazines

There’s a time for brain junk food, but if you’re not putting at least some of the stuff that lights you up in there, then life gets pretty uninspiring.

I have so many unread magazines that it’s not even funny. And they’re genuinely magazines I love.
But how often do I prioritise sitting down with a nice hot chocolate and a magazine over picking up my phone and checking the news or some other inane thing?
Never.
And why?
Because picking up my phone is easier of course.
And I’m sure that there’s something you could substitute magazines for in your own life. Something you want to do, that you know brings you joy, but other mindless distractions are just easier and there on days when you’re really tired (and those days seem to be getting more frequent, right?).
But there’s a problem with the things that are just there.
They’re designed to help you whittle away the hours. And they do just that.
You end up feeling not particularly relaxed, not particularly rejuvenated and not particularly happy with how you’ve spent your time.
And the self-dreamshitting cycle begins.
So I’ve come to a conclusion. Most of the things that bring you joy, light you up and improve your lives aren’t the easy choices.
They’re the ‘other’ choice, the thing we often neglect to do when it’s too easy to pick up your phone.
Now because they aren’t easy doesn’t mean they’re these huge big daunting things. I mean, crawling through mud definitely doesn’t bring me joy.
It’s like wiring your brain again and ignoring the first easier option which usually involves junk food for the brain and googling baby goats in onesies.
There’s a time for brain junk food, but if you’re not putting at least some of the stuff that lights you up in there, then life gets pretty uninspiring.
Be brave and do the harder option. Do the things you actually want to do instead of the nearest things to busy your brain for five minutes.
Trust me, your brain, your heart and your soul will thank you for it. Immensely.
